There are many reasons to use sealants on timber constructions. Among the most common are significant improvement in the thermal properties of homes, protection of beams or logs from moisture, insects, and access by various wood-destroying parasites. Sealing substantially extends the lifespan of the house, saves a lot of energy, and prevents later problems with infested wood. Some timber structures, however, may not necessarily require sealing. These include log cabins where the gap is covered by a wooden batten (some log cabins). Even in such buildings, there are places with cracked beams and corners where it is necessary to protect against the effects of weather.
